Michael Somoroff's body of work titled Absence of Subject was on display at Piazza San Marco, 153A Calle Del Cappello, Venice, during the 2011 Venice Biennale. The opening reception for the artist was on May 31st of that year. from 7-9 pm.

The exhibition includes forty silver prints, ten platinum-palladium prints and seven videos by Michael Somoroff as well as forty August Sander original photographs. Somoroff appropriated selected images as an homage to the legendary German photographer August Sander's collective portrait People of the 20th Century. In each of the images, Somoroff has erased the subject of Sander's photograph retaining only the background. Conceptually and humanistically oriented, each of Somoroff's images demonstrates the persuasive power and aesthetic of Sander's oeuvre even without the human subject.

The work, previously titled The Absence of the Subject, has been celebrated since it was introduced to the public at the 2008 Fotofest in Houston, Texas. A reviewer of that show noted that "they have quite an impact hanging on the wall, especially when they are all seen together in a gallery". The entire exhibition The Absence of the Subject was acquired into the photography collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston under the direction of Anne Wilkes Tucker.

Absence of Subject runs through July 15th.

An illustrated book accompanies the exhibition.
